Elvin Jones
This is a statement I made on the passing of a mentor, master and deeply soulful human being. Mr. Elvin Jones was a very close friend and cohort of my late father Ali Snr. Elvin was an uncle to me. His wisdom and encouragement was crucial in my musical journey. He lives everyday in my spirit and I honor him every time I sit at the drums.
The epitome of the human spirit.
Elvin represents so much of what we aspire to achieve as people. To have such a diverse impact on society is nothing less than divine. To face your fears, overcome personal obstacles, believe in yourself, cultivate and refine your talent are integral portions of the grandness of Elvin.
The passion that he possessed for the music was rivaled by none. In every note he played, the intensity of humanity resounded. In every stroke, the heart beat of manhood was demonstrated. The power and tundra of thunder and the sweet subtle style of sophistication illuminated each and every bandstand graced with his presence.His drumming style is often imitated yet never duplicated.
The point has been argued that Elvin Jones’ drumming is of the most innovative and prolific in modern jazz. It could also be said that without his drumming, the rich and powerful musical contribution of John Coltrane’s quartet might not have had the same impact on music. Many have argued that drums have not been played with such passion, zeal and maintained intensity before him. To have unwavering belief and entrenched commitment in the music we call jazz is paralleled by few.
A gentlemen honored and respected by the giants of music, also a man who always found time to embrace those who may have appeared or deemed insignificant to others. Elvins’ accessibility to people big and small is testament to his exemplary character. There have been many analogies made of the power of his drumming. I like to interpret his drumming and musical contributions as a microcosm of his spirit.
In professional sports a star athlete performing at an optimum level for ten years is astounding. For an amazing musician to perform at an extremely elevated level night after night for over 50 years is nothing short than unimaginable. His spirit and contributions were very special to musicians, jazz fans, drummers and anyone who came in contact with him. His integrity and commitment set such a precedent for greatness.
I thank the Lord for such beautiful creation.
